Owner, designer, creator
Hi, I'm Colleen Havel, a passionate seamstress, based in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada. Growing up in Nova Scotia, I spent a lot of time out doors playing in the fields, woods and streams, as well as down at the shore (they call it the ocean everywhere else). My whole life has been influenced by the people who raised me. My great grandmother, my grand mothers and grand fathers, as well as my family. That large, loosely knit clan of people who are entrepreneurs, as well as steady, enduring folks who farm and knit and sew, and understand that the woods and fields, streams and trees are as much a part of us as anything else. They taught me to believe in fairies, to quilt, make biscuits, to swim in the lake and take joy in hard work. But most importantly, to give more than people expect and do good quietly, so others can have their dignity. The ethos of this is that I live to see the fog on the lake, the smile on a customers face and the joy in a finished project that is perfect in every way.
I create small batches of amazing bags, clothing and accessories. My items are made of new and repurposed materials. Some are offs cuts from other items (great for coordinating!) and some are from clothing I have saved from landfills by upcycling.
As an entrepreneur and a woman running a small business, I appreciate your support. I know you have choices, and choosing to shop Pretty Yellow House allows me to offer you quality items that are Made in Canada.
Head cutter & executive assistant
Erika started as a co-op student and evolved into a world class cutter. She knows all the angles and is proficient in everything she does. She is learning the art of sewing and now helps me with every aspect of the business from cutting to sewing to packaging. Honestly, I'd be lost without her quick wit and peels of laughter!
